Training Course Syllabus:
As our world´s population ages, the incidence of dementia and other dementing illnesses continues to grow. It is important, as more health care facilities create dementia-specific programming, that practitioners learn about the disease process and special considerations for care and treatment planning. By improving the quality of care given to clients with dementia, providers can recognize predictors of cognitive transitions, prevent challenging behaviors and successfully intervene at key points of cognitive decline. With the mandate to decrease physical and chemical restraints, practitioners must learn alternate interventions to help clients keep themselves and others from harm. Due to the large demands of OBRA guidelines, most care has had to focus strictly on personal hygiene and nutritional intake. Clients and their family members need activity intervention, social support and programming and measurement of not only cognition, but also cognitive performance. With growing demands to utilize evidence-based practice, health care professionals also have a responsibility to employ tools and measures to gauge the client´s level of dementia, cognitive performance and independent living skills.
This one-day seminar provides tools for effective assessment and therapeutic intervention with the dementia patient. Participants will learn to evaluate cognition and cognitive performance and utilize effective strategies to enhance independence, function, cooperation and behaviors for the client with dementia. You will acquire new skills to enhance long-term care planning and help patients and families prepare for disease progression and future transitions in cognition. The skills and strategies taught in this seminar can be implemented into practice the very next day to provide better care and achieve better results with dementia patients.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Understand the etiology and progression of different types of dementia
- Develop strategies for managing and preventing symptoms, including confusion, challenging behaviors, balance and sensory problems, contractures and more
- Integrate ADLs and other treatment tools into the client care plan
- Increase documentation, evaluation and staff education skills
- Discuss the etiology of dementia and stages of progression
- Identify key areas for managing dementia, including ADLs, challenging behaviors, balance, strength and fall prevention
- Devise care plans that ensure quality and continuity of care
- Perform and document assessment and evaluation measures to help support evidence-based practice
- Utilize effective screening tools and staff development strategies
- Examine the Cognitive Disability Frame of Reference, Information Processing Model and other psychosocial models that can be used in care planning
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Heather Vasilopoulos, OTR/L, is a Licensed and Registered Occupational Therapist with more than eight years experience specializing in dementia care. She is the owner and director of Vital Spark LLC, an occupational therapy and life coaching company, where she provides therapy consulting services and clinical education for Licensed Nursing Assistants in nursing facilities. Ms. Vasilopoulos also works clinically as a home health Occupational Therapist. As a result of a grant application with the state of New Hampshire Department of Labor, she is in the process of becoming a continuing education provider for the state´s Workforce Opportunity Council to help LNAs maximize employment and career ladder opportunities. Ms. Vasilopoulos previously served as a Program Leader and Occupational Therapist for a locked dementia unit at Harborside Healthcare Northwood in Bedford, New Hampshire. In this role, she provided clinical training and education, rolled out the LightHouse program for 40 dementia patients and created dementia color groups as a care plan and staff education tool. She was trained by Mary Lucero, Registered Nurse and Gerontologist in dementia care.
As a college student, Ms. Vasilopoulos interned at Edith Norse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, with Dr. Ladislav Volicer in the Geriatric Research and Education Program. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of New Hampshire - Durham in 2001 and earned a dementia training certificate from the Cleveland Alzheimer´s Association in 2002. Ms. Vasilopoulos also completed dysphagia training at Harborside Crestwood in Milford, New Hampshire. She is currently working toward a master´s degree in occupational therapy through San Jose State University in California. Her thesis project is on clinical education for LNAs in dementia care. Ms. Vasilopoulos is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the New Hampshire Occupational Therapy Association. In 2003 she served as chair of the Mental Health Special Interest Section for the NHOTA.
Ms. Vasilopoulos is talented in the arts and enjoys creating artist trading cards, puppetry, sculptures, altered art and drawings. She coordinates community craft nights through her company Vital Spark. Ms. Vasilopoulos lives in Manchester, New Hampshire, with her husband and two young daughters.
