Course Outline / Agenda
This course was designed for building, plant, and facility maintenance & energy
management, and it is essential for anyone who needs to understand basic
operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of air conditioning and
refrigeration systems ( AC&R ). The goal of our attendees for this course is to
improve efficiencies and uptime at their industrial plants and large building
facilities. Students can attend one or both days of this two day seminar.
DAY 1 DISCUSSION TOPICS
PRINCIPLES, COMPONENTS & SYSTEMS
Day 1 of this seminar provides a broad introduction to air conditioning and
refrigeration. The first day is an excellent training overview for apprentice
technicians, multi-craft trades people, building managers, or anyone who wants
to understand the general principles and concepts of A/C and refrigeration. In
addition to understanding these general principles, students will learn about
the primary components and accessories used in air conditioning & refrigeration
systems, how they work, and where and how these components and accessories are
used in HVAC&R systems. The goal for Day 1 is to provide the student a
well-rounded introduction to air conditioning and refrigeration. Discussions
about refrigerants & oils, and accompanying regulatory laws will also be
included in this first day.
Fundamentals of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
• Air Conditioning versus Refrigeration
• Laws of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
• Types of Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Systems
Regulation, Codes, and Standards
• New Energy Efficiency Standards (S.E.E.R.)
• EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act of 1990 Regulations

Day 2 of this seminar covers common practices (and some "tricks-of-the-trade")
for general operation and maintenance of A/C and refrigeration systems. The goal
for Day 2 is to learn how to achieve maximum performance for energy efficiency
of air conditioning & refrigeration systems. Students will learn about
maintenance schedules and servicing, system diagnostics, troubleshooting
techniques, and fine tuning to gain maximum efficiency. The second day also
includes an introduction to commercial and industrial chillers and covers
regulatory laws and energy conservation.

Free EPA 608 Technician Certification Testing
(at the end of day 2 only - optional)
Testing for the EPA section 608 certification is optional. Section 608 of the
Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair,
or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants, be certified in
proper refrigerant handling techniques by passing the EPA 608 Technician
Certification exam. Students may take the test at the end of day 2. While we
cover all the necessary material for taking the test and make every attempt to
help our students pass this exam, we cannot guarantee individual success.
Therefore it is recommended that students who want to take the test attend both
days and plan time to study the night before.
What You Will Take Home
