PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Vestibular Rehabilitation: Theory, Evidence and Practical Application

Did you know that dizziness is the second most common complaint heard by primary physicians? Additionally, balance is vital to the performance of almost all everyday life activities. When dizziness or balance problems develop, they can have a profound disruption in a patient's daily life. These symptoms can, at times, be the limiting factor for mobility, keeping patients from freely and safely walking around their homes or going out into the community. Experience and research have proven that Vestibular Rehabilitation is highly effective in the reduction and elimination of balance disorders and vertigo. It is the most successful treatment of the most common cause of vertigo over medication or surgery. Because numerous systems can produce a person's perception, or altered perception of movement, each system must be addressed differently. The ultimate goal of treatment is to eliminate a person's risk for falling.

In this course, you will learn differential diagnostic techniques that identify the contributor of a patient's dizziness. Participants will understand the pathophysiology of the dizziness and treat the condition accordingly. In addition, laboratory components which analyze patients' compensatory functional movement patterns and balance strategies will be reviewed. The lecture and lab components presented will be helpful treating a variety of disorders, including BPPV and chronic vertigo, as well as balance and proprioceptive disorders. Upon completion of this course, you will be confident in manually addressing vertigo, as well as applying functional treatments to improve your patients’ balance.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Do you want to expand your knowledge on the signs and symptoms of vestibular dysfunction?
  • Do you want to discuss evaluation procedures for the oculomotor, vestibular and proprioceptive systems?
  • Do you want to improve your ability to differentiate cervicogenic dizziness from peripheral and central vestibular dysfunction?
  • Do you want to strengthen your development of appropriate, functional retraining techniques for vestibular weakness as it applies to the balance systems?
  • Do you want to rid your patient of vertigo?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this is the class for you!

  • Identify and implement treatment strategies for dizziness caused by BPPV
  • Evaluate and diagnose central and peripheral vertigo
  • Demonstrate steps to conduct a detailed oculomotor analysis
  • Perform manual canalith repositioning techniques
  • Perform functional balance assessment and treatment
  • Understand the epidemiology of dizziness and falling
  • Develop personalized treatment regimens to address specific vertiginous and imbalance systems
  • Understand the pathophysiology of common vestibular disorders
  • Apply anatomy and physiology principles as they relate to the vestibular complex and balance systems
