PROGRAM DETAILS
The Institute of Medicine reports that up to 98,000 deaths occur in U.S. hospitals due to medical errors. According to JCAHO, communication failure is the root cause of most errors. Cultural and linguistic barriers further compound the risk of communication failure. With so many individuals involved in the care of the patient, including the patient and his/her family, there are endless opportunities for errors to occur. The delivery of quality and safe health care depends greatly on effective communication among those caring for the patient and between the health care worker and the patient.
This interactive one-day seminar will provide nursing professionals the advanced skills needed to communicate most effectively with culturally diverse nursing colleagues, physicians, other professionals and the patient and patient"s family. Cultural variations include those based on age/generational differences, gender, language and other cultural influences. Participants will identify, develop and practice effective cross-cultural communication skills to build trust and rapport, reduce misunderstandings and frustration, save time, prevent conflict and, most importantly, improve safety and quality of care for your clients. Skills will be reinforced using group discussions, case studies and role plays so that nurses can reap the benefits of enhanced performance and patient care the very next day.

Assess your communication style and recognize and adjust to diverse communication styles in others
