Overindulged Children and the Adults They Become
PROGRAM DETAILS
Crossing the Line from Love to Overindulgence
Many parents have no idea they have crossed the line from love to
overindulgence. They have no idea they may lose their relationship with their
children. But overindulgence is not just affecting the family! Continuous
problems are pouring into the school due to overindulgence of children. Some
overindulged children are entering the legal system with very serious conduct
disorders. THIS IS A PARENT PROBLEM! You can counsel or educate a child to be
responsible and follow rules, and their parents will talk them out of your good
counsel! Overindulgent parents have lost the skills of becoming excellent
mentoring parents. They create children and adult-children without boundaries,
balance and conscience. Research indicates overindulged children become
self-centered, detached, angry, dependent, entitled and manipulative. They
develop low self-esteem, are missing many skills for success in life, and remain
dependent, conduct-disordered and narcissistic.
NOW THE GOOD NEWS! This one-day seminar, presented by James A. Fogarty, Ed.D.,
will give you many levels of treatment so you can help change these families the
day after the seminar. Enhance your skills to combat both pieces of the puzzle:
techniques to motivate parents, and methods to discourage children’s outlandish
behavior and belief systems. Dr. Fogarty will explore what motivates parents to
overindulge their children, how to uncover and correct families with serious
emotional issues, and the various forms overindulgence can take. Additionally,
overindulgence will be examined at every economic level, to further help
clinicians and educators correctly identify and intervene with all types of
families. This course is a MUST for anyone that works with children and sees the
maladaptive behaviors that overindulgence causes, but also sees and wants to
cultivate the exceptional potential within each of these children!
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Discuss updated research of the symptoms and effects overindulgence has on
children and when they become adults
- Define overindulgence across all economic boundaries—this is not just a
"rich" issue
- Assess how overindulgence of children continues, even in a bad economy
- WHAT MOTIVATES 9 TYPES OF OVERINDULGENT PARENTS. You will learn the
symptoms and cognitive distortions that drive each type of overindulgent
parent.
- Overindulgent parents need to be trained to think like a mentoring parent.
You will learn the 10 QUALITIES OF THE MENTORING PARENT, which create
cognitive restructuring within your clients.
- 8 MAJOR REACTIONS of children being overindulged. Parents expect love, but
they do not get love.
- Ideas to STOP OVERINDULGENCE RIGHT NOW!
- A Model of Dysfunction explaining WHAT DRIVES THE MOST SERIOUS
OVERINDULGENT PARENTS
- How to HELP DEVASTATED FAMILIES who have serious emotional issues (death,
trauma or crisis) but keep the children superficially happy and never work
through their issues.
- That "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" really means REPRESS, REPRESS, REPRESS
leading to long-term unresolved issues for children and their parents.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
James A. Fogarty, Ed.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Certified
School Psychologist, national lecturer and author. Throughout the last 23 years
he has specialized in grief and trauma with children, adolescents and adults.
His specialization is inter-related with other clinical issues including family
counseling, behavioral management, crisis management, trauma and treating severe
conduct disorders. His work in grief and trauma led Dr. Fogarty to realize that
many caring parents with children that have experienced loss and trauma
overindulge their children. Often, parents' overindulgences of their children
are based on their belief that enforcing happiness magically erases children's
natural but painful reactions to loss and trauma. He is the author of several
books, one on this topic called Overindulged Children and another book, The
Magical Thoughts of Grieving Children.
