PROGRAM DETAILS
Warfarin has been around for a very long time. It was given to President Eisenhower in 1955, but it was not well managed until about 1990. Despite its long history, warfarin still generates about one article per day published in journals indexed by the National Library of Medicine and is reputedly the drug that causes more legal actions than any other. The concerns surrounding warfarin stem from its use as rat poison, involvement in malpractice cases and incidence of interactions with other commonly prescribed drugs and foods. Nonetheless, it is affordable, highly effective in preventing and treating blood clotting and widely used. Being able to skillfully manage warfarin therapy is essential for the health and safety of patients and can increase a person´s value to the health care team.
Participants in this one-day seminar will gain practical skills and knowledge to effectively manage patients taking warfarin. You will be prepared to overcome the concerns and misconceptions that create fear and resistance in patients. You will also learn how to manage interactions with common drugs and foods and apply problem-solving strategies in the monitoring of warfarin dosage. Several legal actions will be discussed with the emphasis on how health care professionals can avoid the conditions that contributed to them. Participants will learn about the latest developments in agents designed to create wider choices in the anticoagulation field. You will be able to relate this valuable information to clinical practice the very next day.
