Psychology and Spirituality: How to Help Your Clients and Heal the
Human Psyche by Albert LaChance PROGRAM DETAILS For generations we have witnessed a deepening rift between science and spirituality. This has been felt most acutely in the realm of psychology and spirituality, because both attempt to deal with the healing of the human person. Many people feel confronted with a choice between their religious sensibilities and the medical model of mental health. As a result, emotional healing is often polarized as though the only options are, on the one hand, a behavioral/scientific model, and on the other, a spiritual model sometimes viewed as the domain of the clergy. With recent insights emerging from the Jungian, Transpersonal, Integral and 12-step models, it is becoming more apparent that this arbitrary separation in our understanding could not be further from the truth. Lasting healing in an individual might only occur when his/her psychological and spiritual health is understood to be one. It is becoming apparent that long-term mental and emotional health requires more than a temporary reduction in symptoms. What seems to be required is a higher consciousness from which a larger sense of self can be derived. When we consider that the root meaning of the Greek word, "psyche," is soul, this truth becomes more self-evident.
For three decades, Dr. LaChance has been researching the fundamental unity underlying all cultural systems and their various approaches to the healing of the soul. Not only does he see great value in both psychology and spirituality, he has sought in his book, The Architecture of the Soul, (published in 2005 by North Atlantic Books) to join the two in a functional and unitive model of the human. In this seminar, Dr. LaChance will share the synthesis gained from his years of research and open up a future model for healing not only the human, but also through the human, the planet and her life forms. He will also share stories from his personal experience in clinical practice of what happens to individuals, couples and families when this model of healing is applied. Participants will leave with an understanding of how the modern psyche evolved, and how our loss of contact with our deeper instincts is causing psychological and spiritual disease in individuals and cultures. The ideas presented will give clinicians a different lens to use when assessing and treating clients.
