Health care professionals will often recommend the modified barium swallow to assess swallow function and determine least restrictive diet, swallowing strategies and therapeutic intervention. This one day workshop will discuss the rationale for a modified barium swallow, completion of study and interpretation of the x-ray. Diets and thickened liquids will be reviewed as well as alternative methods of nutrition, waivers and non-compliance. Therapeutic interventions will be presented in a lab format. Participants will construct therapy materials and have hands on practice with specific exercises to address lips, tongue, chewing, laryngeal elevation and velopharyngeal insufficiency.

Identify the anatomical landmarks and terminology in the modified barium swallow report
Discuss rationale for various food items in the modified barium swallow study
Discuss how to increase calorie intake rather than volume of food to help patients who are at risk nutritionally

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
DENISE DOUGHERTY, MA, CCC-SLP, is a Speech Pathologist who has her own practice, The Therapy Team, LLC, where she conducts therapy with both children and adults. Ms. Dougherty received her Bachelor´s degree at Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania, a Master´s Degree from St. Louis University and has completed postgraduate courses at Johns Hopkins University and several doctoral courses at University of Phoenix. She is certified in VitalStim therapy and is an instructor for VitalStim certification, is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and has received numerous ASHA ACE Awards. During more than 27 years as a Speech Pathologist, Ms. Dougherty has worked at United Cerebral Palsy, Easter Seals, in long-term care; is a board member of The American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA), AAPPSPA Program Chair for 2006 and 2007 Conference; is a AAPPSPA liaison for the ASHA Health Care and Economics Committee; served as secretary of CORSPAN; and as a private practitioner. Ms. Dougherty was also an adjunct faculty member at York College of Pennsylvania and Wesley College in Dover, Delaware.
