PROGRAM DETAILS
When treating back patients, traditional physical therapy techniques have focused on evaluating separate planes of movement and primarily treating muscle actions in symmetrical patterns. However, muscles are not always acting symmetrically during functional movement. Through the latest clinical research, we have learned that trunk muscles each have unique actions depending on the direction of movement and type of force. This results in a synchronous blend of isometric, concentric and eccentric muscle actions in multiple planes of movement. With injury, some muscles do not fully recover, even when the patient feels better. Without addressing this specific muscle dysfunction, the risk of re-injury is great. For truly functional rehabilitation of back-injured patients, clinicians must be able to identify not only the painful movement, but also the muscle activation pattern that is dysfunctional and treat it with a direct approach.
This one-day course will sharpen your postural assessment skills and add new treatment tools and exercise progressions that you can put into practice the very next day. A comprehensive review of the latest research will help you identify the most important trunk muscle stabilizers and mobilizers. You will learn joint and muscle-specific observation techniques for both static and dynamic posture. You will also learn how to isolate and facilitate more specific muscle activation sequences in trunk stabilization exercises. Take core, balance and proprioceptive training to the next level with the interactive, hands-on lab -- learn how to challenge your patients in all planes of movement utilizing balls, foam rollers and balance discs/boards in effective progressions. With a more focused approach, you will get better outcomes in a shorter period of time. And both you and your patient will have fun in the process!
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN - Learn a more comprehensive posture and movement assessment
- Add new tools for treatment using the latest balance and core stability equipment
- Improve your success rate with subacute and chronic back patients
- Learn hands-on experience with over 4 hours of lab instruction!
- Observe and identify spinal instabilities and structure(s) affected by injury
- Visualize and describe the biomechanical mechanism of injury and resulting dysfunction movement pattern
- Learn a systematic approach to assess static and dynamic posture
- Acquire new tools and exercise progressions for treating trunk instability using the latest balance training and biofeedback equipment
What You Should Bring: Please bring a towel or exercise mat to use on the floor. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow exposure to the thoraco-lumbar spine so you will be able to practice the exercises during the lab.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER Sue Fleshman, MS, PT, ATC, is an expert in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine, with over 18 years of experience treating patients and athletes of all age groups and activity levels. She graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science/Athletic Training from Penn State University and earned her M.S. in Biology, specializing in Biomechanics, from Bucknell University. Ms. Fleshman received a post-baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Central Florida. She was selected for the Medical Staff at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and was awarded a one-year fellowship at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. She has also worked with various professional and elite athletes, including the pro WTA tennis tour, World Cup Figure Skating, Wrestling and Soccer events, U.S. Volleyball and Tae Kwon Do teams, the World Triathlon Championships and Walt Disney Marathon events. While working with the U.S.O.C. Biomechanics Division, Ms. Fleshman researched and developed a Clinical Plyometrics protocol and presented findings at the national APTA National Conference, 1998. She has performed extensive research on the knee, spine, isokinetics and balance. In her clinical practice, Ms. Fleshman has utilized several specialized techniques in manual therapy, taping/strapping, active stabilization and soft tissue release to improve functional movement patterns.
Currently, Ms. Fleshman resides in Cape Coral, Florida. In addition to her patient care responsibilities, she also teaches Personal Training Certification courses for W.I.T.S., (World Instructor Training Schools). She is a sports medicine consultant and frequent guest speaker for groups such as Team in Training-Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and USA Fit-Tampa Bay Marathon Training. Her knowledge and experience is sought privately by post-rehab and health-conscious clients and athletes of all ages. Sue is an accomplished athlete herself, having completed 4 marathons, 3 Half Ironman triathlons, numerous shorter distance races and triathlons, and has received her Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
