PROGRAM DETAILS
It is estimated that peripheral neuropathy affects almost 20 million Americans. Complications associated with peripheral neuropathy include disuse atrophy, contractures, weakness, balance deficits and increased risk for falls and lower extremity wounds. Neuropathy is becoming more prevalent both as a primary diagnosis and a co-morbidity. With contributing factors such as diabetes mellitus on the rise, both outpatient and inpatient therapists are seeing neuropathy patients more frequently.
In this one-day course you will examine the causes, contributing factors and manifestations of peripheral neuropathy. Recent research and evidence-based treatment will also be discussed. Participants will benefit from over two hours of lab time, in which you will demonstrate evaluative techniques, biomechanical analysis of the lower quarter and treatment techniques. Attendees will leave equipped to more effectively assess and treat patients referred with peripheral neuropathy and to identify specific conditions that may place each patient at high risk for falls or lower extremity ulcers.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN - Skillfully evaluate the
patient's pain, sensation, range of motion, balance and risk of falls and lower extremity ulcers
- Demonstrate functional balance assessment, including range of motion, strength, proprioception and biomechanical analysis of the lower quarter
- Identify treatment approaches that work, and discuss the role of Medicare´s ruling against MIRE reimbursement
- Address the challenges of treating diabetic neuropathy
- Employ an evidence-based approach to rehabilitation of neuropathy patients
- Identify the conditions that cause peripheral neuropathy
- Discuss the role of neuropathy in wound development and safety/fall risk
- Demonstrate skills to thoroughly assess neuropathy patients
- Apply appropriate treatment modalities to alleviate pain and improve function
- Outline the essential elements of functional balance, including range of motion, strength, proprioception and biomechanical analysis of the lower quarter
- Evaluate nutrition, circulation and wounds in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy
- Develop strategies for establishing a successful peripheral neuropathy treatment program in your clinic or organization
- Evaluate the effects of the Medicare ruling against reimbursement for MIRE in neuropathy treatment
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kevin Kucko, MAPT, ATC, is a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer with over 20 years experience. As the Director of Rehabilitation at a regional medical center near Charlotte, North Carolina, he has developed many successful outpatient treatment programs, including those for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, ergonomics and back safety, gait analysis and orthotic correction. Working with a variety of medical disciplines, including dentists, orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons, Mr. Kucko developed a systematic approach to managing TMJ dysfunction and has over 10 years experience in this area of treatment. His techniques have improved outcomes not only for patients but for referring physicians as well.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Kucko also owns and operates a health care consulting firm specializing in the areas of functional ergonomics, back safety for health care workers and development of outpatient services for hospitals and private clinics. He has spoken at numerous conferences and seminars in the medical field. Mr. Kucko received his Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1990 and earned a
Master's degree in Physical Therapy from Touro College in 1995. His current project involves bringing evidence-based practices into outpatient clinics in anticipation of
Medicare's "pay for performance" initiative.
