Training Course Syllabus:

PROGRAM DETAILS

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exists in very mild to very severe forms and its complexities are only beginning to be understood. Subtypes of OCD and differences in onset can sometimes have great implications for prognosis and outcomes. The treatment of this complicated disorder can seem overwhelming and clinicians often become frustrated with suboptimal results in therapy. Because exposure with response prevention treatment is designed to increase anxiety
levels, it is often difficult to engage individuals in the process, further hindering the clinician's ability to successfully intervene.

This one-day seminar provides a complete overview of OCD, its subtypes, course, onset, prognosis and practical guidelines for effectively diagnosing and treating this complex disorder. Case examples will demonstrate the use of techniques that are usually only described briefly in textbooks. In addition, participants will discuss strategies to enhance motivation and encourage individuals to engage in exposure with response prevention, an anxiety-provoking treatment. The use of cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmacological and other interventions for OCD will also be discussed. Attendees will explore future directions and innovations that provide encouragement, especially when working with clients that have proven to be "treatment-resistant." You will leave the day with strategies and skills that can be immediately implemented for more effective treatment of OCD.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Provide more effective treatment of OCD across the lifespan

  • Distinguish between OCD and "obsessiveness" that is often found in similar disorders

  • Explore the various OCD subtypes, their symptoms, course, onset, prognosis and implications for treatment

  • Engage and motivate clients for better results in exposure with response prevention

  • Evaluate evidence-based pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions, as well as future trends in OCD treatment

  •
  • Identify the characteristics, etiology, symptoms, subtypes and clinical course of OCD

  • Demonstrate competency in differential diagnosis of OCD and similar disorders

  • Describe the prognostic indicators and patterns of symptom change across the lifespan

  • Understand the role of "obsessiveness" in related disorders and treatment implications

  • Develop practical approaches to implementing exposure with response prevention treatment

  • Examine techniques to boost client motivation for engaging in treatment and completing ERP homework

  • Discuss pharmacological treatment of OCD symptoms, including effective use of multiple medications

  • Discuss current and future trends in diagnosing and treating OCD
