Social Difficulties of Learning, Attentional, and ASD Training Seminar
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Traditionally, professionals have believed the
social interaction difficulties many of those with neurobiological disorders
(i.e., learning disorders, AD/HD, nonverbal learning disorders, Asperger's
disorder, etc.) are solely the result of a lack of social skills knowledge. They
believed if their clients could be given adequate knowledge, their social
interaction difficulties would disappear. Yet, after being given extensive
social skills training many would continue to appear odd and be rejected in
social, work and classroom situations. In the past, the only "solution" was to
provide more social skills training, which would often produce the same
disappointing results. Recent research utilizing advanced brain imaging
techniques has identified neurobiological deficits that underlie these clients'
difficulties in social interaction. These deficits must be addressed along with
the provision of social skills training for clients to achieve their full
"social potential."
This one-day seminar is taught by an instructor who
knows the problems of both sides of the learning disorders equation. Dr. Kevin
Blake was born hearing impaired and dyslexic. The techniques he will teach you
would have removed a great deal of the painful frustration he experienced in his
life both in the classroom and socially. Because of his disabilities and
thousands of hours of work in this field, it is his goal and mission in life to
share this information with every caring person he can. Attendees will learn the
exciting new research on how the unique neurophysiology of those with
neurobiological disorders can negatively affect their ability to interact
socially. Specific treatments for a wide variety of the most common neurosocial
problems experienced by those with neurobiological disorders will be discussed.
What Dr. Kevin Blake will teach you really works, isn't difficult to understand,
and will make your clients' lives easier, as well as your own. This course is a
MUST for anyone who works with learning or socially impaired individuals.

PRESENTER'S BIO
Kevin T. Blake, Ph.D., P.L.C., is a recognized national authority on learning disorders and AD/HD in children, adolescents and adults. He has specialized for over 20 years in learning disorders and AD/HD and lives and works as a licensed psychologist in Tucson, Arizona. The interest in learning disorders and AD/HD were spurred by his own struggles trying to overcome his reading disorder/dyslexia and hearing impairment, which were initially diagnosed during the first year of his doctoral program at the age of 26. At the time, the early 1980s, not much was known about adults with learning disorders. As Dr. Blake struggled to learn about his own learning disorder he decided to make his life´s work the diagnosis and treatment of adults with learning disorders and AD/HD. Dr. Blake earned his doctorate degree from Oklahoma State University and his dissertation research focused on self-esteem and anxiety in the learning disabled college student. When he started his professional life, he was one of a handful of professionals in the country with such a focus. Now he travels the country sharing his personal story and what he has learned about learning disorders, AD/HD and other neurobiological disorders with professionals who work with these populations, individuals with these disorders and their loved ones.
Dr. Blake is a member of several state and national organizations, such as the American Psychological Association, International Dyslexia Association, Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders, Learning Disabilities Association and the National Attention Deficit Disorder Association. He has been the facilitator of a Tucson support group for AD/HD adults for several years. Additionally, he is a published author with articles having appeared in Attention!, LDA Newsbriefs and Perspectives (of the International Dyslexia Association). Dr. Blake was a 1991 delegate to the National Institute for Literacy´s "LEAD 2000 Congress," where he was a member of a special committee advising the U.S. Congress on diagnostic and remediation issues confronting learning disabled adults. He is an accomplished and engaging speaker whose presentations incorporate germane information, practical how-to´s and appropriate life experiences.
