PROGRAM DETAILS
Infection is a leading cause of physician office visits and hospital
admissions and is also responsible for complicating and prolonging many hospital
stays. Managing infectious diseases is very complex because of antimicrobial
resistance. Most antibiotic therapy is "empiric" in nature; therefore it is
critical for health care professionals to understand common pathogens and
recognize the potential for resistance.
This one-day seminar will provide participants with the latest information on
some of the most common infectious diseases and their treatments. You will
examine the latest evidence regarding drug resistance, as well as national
guidelines and new drug information, in order to make better decisions about the
use of antimicrobial therapy. Participants will identify evidence-based
strategies for treating MRSA, VRE, Clostridium difficile, community-acquired
pneumonia and other common infections. You will also evaluate the role of
antiviral medications in the treatment and prevention of influenza. Attendees
will leave this seminar equipped with practical information to help achieve
better patient outcomes related to infectious disease.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Treat common infections based on the latest national guidelines, new drug
information and drug resistance evidence
Identify adverse effects associated with newer antibiotics
Select appropriate, empirical antibiotic therapy for patients with
respiratory infections including community-acquired pneumonia
Consider treatment options for Clostridium difficile infections
and community-associated vs. nosocomial MRSA infections
Examine the role of antiviral medications in the treatment and prevention
of influenza
Describe the mechanisms of bacterial resistance to antibiotics
Examine the mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications and
dosing considerations for certain antibiotics
Discuss national recommendations for treating community-acquired pneumonia
Differentiate between community-associated and nosocomial types of MRSA
infections
Explain the need for broad antimicrobial therapy for patients at risk of
healthcare-associated infections
Determine when to use oral vancomycin for the treatment of Clostridium
difficile infections
Identify prophylactic and treatment strategies for influenza
