Pressure Ulcer Management: Clinical and
Legal Competence
PROGRAM DETAILS
Pressure Ulcers are a problem our country has addressed throughout my
training and career. Meetings were held, regulations were drafted and facilities
followed up accordingly by writing policies and procedures. With so much energy,
time and money, you would expect that the problem should be well under control
by now, but unfortunately the statistics tell us a very different story. Every
year it is estimated that in U.S. acute care facilities there are 2.5 million
patients treated for pressure ulcers. It is estimated that each year
approximately 60,000 patients die of pressure ulcer complications at an
estimated cost of $11 billion per year. Health care professionals not well
versed in the most current developments in wound care not only place their
patients' health at risk, but put themselves and their facilities at legal risk
as well.
In this program, we will follow a patient from admission through each aspect of
the wound care process. In a non-threatening, relaxed environment we will share
with you the most current evidence-based pressure ulcer materials available. The
wound care process can sometimes seem very confusing at times. We will take each
aspect starting with the admission assessment, risk assessment, lab
interpretations, vascular testing, nutritional screening, bacterial bioburden,
continence status and much more, before determining and establishing the
patient's plan of care. Basic and advanced dressings will be discussed, as well
as biophysical agents and pain management interventions. Before leaving we will
clarify some frequently encountered problems on pressure ulcer documentation in
various health care settings. You will learn the names and contact information
for authoritative sources of clinical and regulatory pressure ulcer information.
Most important, you will return to your facility a more competent and
enthusiastic wound care provider.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
State eight risk factors for the development of pressure ulcers
Identify three lab tests relevant to the management of your patients with
pressure ulcers
Examine how to appropriately stage/classify pressure ulcers
Discuss the difference between contamination, colonization, critical
colonization and infection
Identify the uses and contraindications of various biophysical agents
List eight pain management options to consider that would decrease wound
pain
Outline two standardized risk assessment scales
Name three vascular tests used to detect arterial insufficiency
List five key elements of the 5 Million Lives Campaign for pressure ulcer
prevention
To become a more competent wound care provider
