PROGRAM DETAILS
The terms "repetitive stress injury", "repetitive motion disorder" and
"cumulative trauma disorder" are just some of the terms used to refer to
disorders associated with the overloading of particular muscle groups from
repeated use or the maintenance of constrained postures. The terms apply to
several disorders that are commonly work-related such as carpal tunnel syndrome
and other entrapment neuropathies, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, epicondylitis,
bursitis and more. These conditions typically develop over periods of weeks,
months or years and can cause pain, swelling, decreased motion and strength and
muscle fatigue. Repetitive motions and strained postures may be required in a
variety of occupations and, without treatment, can cause chronic pain syndromes
and even permanent disability. These disorders now account for a large
proportion of worker compensation cases and lost work days.
In this one-day, hands-on seminar, attendees will learn how to most effectively
treat upper extremity repetitive stress injuries. With over 28 years of
experience, Theresa A. Huber, OTR, RMT, NMT, will share with attendees her
wealth of knowledge in occupational therapy, muscle energy techniques, work
evaluation and ergonomics. Utilizing a mixture of therapeutic methods, the
instructor combines the most effective means of working with the various types
of repetitive motion injuries to not only relieve pain, but also prevent
re-injury. Theresa will walk participants through identifying the risk factors
for re-injury, providing therapeutic interventions specific to the client's
needs, and educating clients and employers on making reasonable accommodations.
Attendees will benefit from relevant and applicable discussion topics as well as
the hands-on implementation of assessment and treatment strategies in multiple
laboratory sessions.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Develop specific treatment plans by adapting therapeutic interventions to
symptoms and job requirements
Identify risk factors, pathology and effective interventions for distinct
repetitive strain disorders
Explore the benefits of the Electro-Therapeutic Point Stimulation (ETPS)
device
Examine critical physical demands in specific occupations and discuss
prevention, treatment and the "Return to Work" process
Identify reasonable accommodations, such as job modifications and
ergonomic interventions
Apply unique combinations of therapy including: connective tissue
mobilization, myofascial release, reciprocal inhibition and more
Discuss the prevalence of Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs), and identify
who is most at risk for developing one
Identify the common symptoms of RSIs
Become familiar with the ICD-9 codes of musculoskeletal disorders related
to RSIs
Describe effective RSI-prevention strategies
Identify the physical demands and risk factors specific to clients'
occupations
Determine the reasonable accommodations and job modifications necessary
for clients to safely return to work
Recommend ergonomic modifications for clients' work stations
Compare various treatment modalities for effectiveness with each condition
Apply therapeutic interventions for pain relief in hands-on learning
sessions, including: identification of trigger points, connective tissue
releases, muscle energy techniques, stretching exercises and more
Discover effective stretching and home programs to offer your clients for
optimal rehabilitation
What You Should Bring: Participants are asked to bring a
massage table or mat, pillows, bolsters, and non-oily lotion (ex. Biotone deep
tissue lotion). Because this is a hands-on seminar, please dress comfortably in
exercise clothing and sports undergarments.
